Good article from Zeynep Tufekci in the NYT on OpenAI and the Navier-Stokes fluid dynamics math problem.
Couple of things about this:
- The proof still needs to be verified.
- This bit from Sebastien Bubeck from OpenAI stands out:
Regarding the level of human involvement on our end: although a group of people was involved in our efforts, we collectively had no research-level expertise in fluid dynamics and the Navier-Stokes problem, and therefore were unable to meaningfully contribute to the mathematical content.
I’m not sure this is the flex he seems to think it is.
My unkind thoughts do not make me an unkind person. My unkind thoughts come, perhaps, from some injured part of myself. That part thinks the thoughts are justified, because don’t we all do that? What makes me a compassionate person is not the absence of unkind thoughts. Right action despite unkind thoughts is what makes me a compassionate person.
